Deep Cycle Solar and Backup batteries

Deep Cycle Solar and Backup  batteries are the storage tank of a power  system.

Deep Cycle Solar and Backup  batteries are specifically designed deep cycle batteries that by their very nature and chemical composition, lend themselves perfectly to solar powered energy systems.

The solar deep cycle battery, range include various  lead acid battery options.

There are some confusion in the market that batteries such as sealed deep cycle  batteries, Gel deep cycle  batteries, Calcium deep cycle battery, Calcium silver deep cycle battery, AGM deep cycle Batteries , VRLA deep cycle batteries or Lead Crystal deep cycle batteries are not lead acid, but in fact they are all different or advanced variables of the basic deep cycle batteries.

Each Solar and backup deep cycle battery has its own application  and cost, Cost often guide the usage of battery for the application.

Some of the so called “deep cycle Batteries” such as the calcium calcium batteries or calcium Silver are for instance not ideal for big permanent solar solution installations.  They are more suited, for UPS or backup applications.

Whereas the AGM solar deep cycle  battery and the VRLA solar deep cycle battery is more suitable for solar power solutions .

Solar deep cycle batteries, in fixed installations should not be deeply discharged, as the expected battery lifetime is directly related tot the discharge cycle of a solar deep cycle battery. Please refer to our page on the calculator of Solar Batteries  

For instance a good battery would specify 500 Cycles at 50% discharge, but 2000 cycles at 35% DOD (depth of discharge). That is a life time expectancy of 2-3 years versus 8-10 years.  Thus in investment of double the battery quantity for an application would increase the lifetime of up to 3 times.

The US31D is a very good deep Cycle Flooded battery, Battery is made in USA, being a flooded deep cycle battery it requires continuous attention such a water refilling, failure to do so see a very fast decline in life time and performance of the battery. A Flooded deep cycle battery as advantages over any type of Gel Deep Cycle  battery, that the “reaction” performance times are faster and it can handle higher peak currents without the voltage dips, associated with slower gel deep cycle batteries.               Refer Table 3 for specification.

Lead Crystal Deep Cycle batteries, are another range of the so Called VRLA batteries. The silicon gel used to create the GEL battery, form crystals, which has the reference as Lead Crystal battery. The Deep cycle battery range, offer other advantageous such prolonged shelf lifetime of up to 2 years and up to 3200 cycles, at 20% DOD of discharge, In power Backup application can thus reach a life time of up to 20 years, in Solar power solutions more in the area of 10-12 years. The Price is still a bit high compared to traditional VRLA Gell batteries.  Refer Table 4 for a list of specifications.

Hoppecke Deep Cycle Solar Battery Flooded Solar Hoppecke deep cycle solar Batteries

The Hoppecke flooded deep cycle battery range, is really the battery range, which proof the advantageous of a Flooded battery tot he extreme. The batteries are Deep Cycle flooded Lead acid, it creates its lifetime ability by having thicker Plates and also tactically cycling the electrolytes. The functions which create superiority - comes at an additional cost of SIZE - battery for same rating is bigger and also additional cost.

However where most deep cycle battery types would estimate a lifetime of 3000-4000 cycles at 20% DOD (Depth of Discharge), This range of deep cycle solar batteries would claim up to 6000 cycles at 20% DOD, that is a expected double the life time application , thus a life time expectancy in Solar applications of between 15 and 20 years.

The disadvantage only being the delivery time of these batteries, are often up to 8 weeks, and the cost is substantially more than equivalent deep cycle batteries, but the COST per Cycle is again lower.
